Caring for Your Merino Wool Piece
Merino wool is soft, breathable, and naturally resilient, but a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking and feeling its best.
Washing
Hand wash when possible. Use lukewarm water, around 30°C, and a wool-safe or mild detergent.
Skip the scrubbing. Gently swirl the piece in soapy water, let it soak for a few minutes, then rinse with water of the same temperature. Sudden temperature changes can cause the fibres to felt.
Avoid regular detergents and fabric softeners. They can strip merino's natural lanolin and roughen the fibres. Use a wool detergent or a sulphate-free baby shampoo instead.
Drying
Never wring or twist the piece to remove water. Instead, press out excess moisture with a clean towel.
Dry flat, reshaping the piece to its original form. Hanging can cause stretching, especially when wet.
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, as both can cause fading or shrinkage.
Storing
Fold, don't hang. Hanging knitwear over time leads to stretched shoulders and shapes.
Store in a breathable space, like a drawer or cotton garment bag, rather than sealed plastic.
Use natural moth deterrents such as cedar blocks or lavender sachets if storing for a long period.
Everyday Care
Air it out instead of washing after every wear. Merino is naturally odour-resistant, so a good airing often refreshes it without a full wash.
Snags happen. If a thread pulls, don't cut it. Gently ease the fabric to work the thread back into place.
With the right care, merino wool pieces can last for years, softening and settling in beautifully over time.
